Milltek Sport backs Volkswagen Racing Cup: click to enlargeBritain’s best-supported one-make saloon series, the Volkswagen Racing Cup, will have a new title sponsor for 2014 as performance exhaust manufacturer Milltek Sport steps up to celebrate 10 years of association with the championship.

Milltek Sport provides race exhaust systems, designed and built in the same way as their production systems, to the majority of the grid, and will this season reinforce its branding at the Cup’s seven British GT-supporting events by fielding its own Golf GTI, to be driven by the winner of a talent-search contest.

Championship manager Matthew Walker said: “Milltek Sport has supported the Volkswagen Racing Cup since 2004 and its products have helped our competitors to win many races during the last decade. Volkswagen Racing UK is delighted to welcome Milltek as title sponsor of the championship for the coming season, which is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in the history of the series.

“The Milltek Sport ‘Find a Driver’ contest is a truly exciting initiative, and really marks out Milltek as being a dynamic partner and perfect title sponsor for the Championship.”

Milltek Sport managing director Steve Pound added: “The Volkswagen Racing Cup has carved a real reputation for itself as a well run, well-policed championship ideal for experienced racers and those just starting out on their track careers. We are delighted to be lending our name to the series and supporting the competitors, many of whom are clients and friends.

“We had a huge response at the Autosport International racing car show to our ‘win a drive’ contest, and have whittled down the hundreds of entries to a shortlist of eight, who will be put through their paces next month at Donington Park by a panel of judges led by our brand ambassador Tom Onslow-Cole.” The contest victor will win a supported season’s racing in a Milltek Sport-branded Mk VI Golf GTI run by 2012 champion team KPM Racing.

The entry list for the coming season of the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup opened recently and the early indications are that grids will again be close to capacity – the championship last year attracted an average of 27 cars to each meeting. The opening rounds of the season are scheduled for Easter Monday (21 April) at the Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire.

There will be twin races at all seven of the Racing Cup’s meetings, alongside the prestigious British GT Championship; a seasonal highlight will be a mid-July visit to the Belgian Grand Prix circuit of Spa-Francorchamps.
